GRID CONNECTION EXPERT

We are recruiting on behalf of an independent power producer with a growing offshore wind portfolio. The company is strengthening its electrical engineering function and is looking for a Lead Power Systems Engineer- Grid Connection Expert to take technical ownership of the electrical system of an offshore wind project as it moves through final design, construction, commissioning and first power.

The scope spans the entire electrical chain, from the turbines and inter-array cabling, through the offshore and onshore substations and export cable, up to the point of connection with the Polish transmission system operator. You will make sure that what is built and energised matches the approved design, the contractual technical requirements, the grid connection agreement and the applicable grid code and standards.

This is a hands-on integration role. You will resolve system-level technical issues, evaluate how design changes affect performance and compliance, track grid code obligations, and support the project team through commissioning and energisation so that the asset reaches commercial operation performing as intended. You will work alongside the Engineering Manager, package managers, senior electrical engineers, construction and commissioning leads, the grid connection team and the future operations team.

What you will do

Power system studies and network models

  • Lead the finalisation and technical sign-off of the studies needed for construction, commissioning and grid compliance
  • Critically review network models and study inputs, checking them against the current design and actual equipment data
  • Gather and validate technical data and simulation models from the turbine, cable and substation suppliers and other equipment vendors
  • Assess study outputs covering, among others: load flow and fault levels; voltage control and reactive power; dynamic behaviour and stability; EMT analysis where needed; harmonics, resonance and power quality; protection grading and fault clearance; cable energisation and switching overvoltages; energisation sequences and operating scenarios
  • Spot differences between study assumptions and the as-built or as-commissioned configuration
  • Turn study findings into concrete actions: setting changes, control requirements or commissioning tests
  • Keep network models up to date as the design evolves and equipment is commissioned, and deliver final validated models and reports for compliance and handover

Grid code and TSO compliance

  • Track compliance with the grid code, the connection agreement and TSO technical requirements
  • Oversee compliance actions, supporting evidence, simulations and test requirements
  • Work with the Grid Connection Manager and the TSO on technical topics linked to commissioning, energisation, testing and operational acceptance
  • Review compliance test procedures, technical submissions and test outcomes
  • Make sure any change to equipment, control parameters, network topology or protection settings is checked for its compliance impact
  • Follow up open technical conditions so the right evidence is ready for each project milestone
  • Help clear technical obstacles that could hold up grid approval, energisation or COD

System integration and commissioning

  • Act as the interface with the substation lead engineer on ratings, protection, control and integration topics
  • Work with protection and control, SCADA, telecoms and power plant controller specialists on integration questions
  • Coordinate with commissioning, substation teams, the turbine supplier, cable contractors and the TSO to solve system-wide electrical problems
  • Review commissioning procedures and results for protection, control functions, reactive power capability, voltage control and overall system performance
  • Confirm that installed configuration and settings align with the approved design and study assumptions
  • Evaluate abnormal results, unexpected trips, harmonic problems and other deviations, and lead root-cause analysis and corrective actions for significant issues
  • Ensure key power system risks and compliance gaps are closed or properly managed before energisation and acceptance milestones

Handover to operations

  • Support compliance testing and verification of the plant’s performance
  • Review operating assumptions, system limitations, protection documentation and remaining compliance obligations
  • Communicate residual risks and operating constraints to Operations and Asset Management
  • Help close out technical acceptance and open electrical items
  • Capture lessons learned from construction and commissioning in the final documentation

What you bring

Must-haves

  • MSc or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems or a comparable field
  • Around 7–10 years in electrical engineering, ideally in power systems or renewables
  • Proven background in power system studies, electrical integration or grid compliance
  • Solid knowledge of connection agreements, grid codes and TSO requirements
  • Experience reviewing network models, studies, equipment data and supplier documentation
  • Experience managing technical interfaces between turbine, cable, substation and transmission scopes
  • Good grasp of dynamic performance, power quality, protection coordination and reactive power control
  • Hands-on use of PowerFactory (DIgSILENT), PSS/E and/or PSCAD; other analysis tools are a plus
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, and a habit of documenting and sharing knowledge so the team can build on it
  • Full professional English (written and spoken); English is the working language of an international team

Nice-to-haves

  • Involvement in building, commissioning and energising large electrical infrastructure
  • HV system design, testing or maintenance experience
  • Experience preparing technical documentation, schematics and layouts
  • Familiarity with Polish grid code requirements and the offshore development process
  • Polish language skills
  • Strong communication, team orientation and genuine interest in innovation and sustainability
